Abstract: This seminar will describe the various software and control algorithms that are used in typical electric power system control centers.  It will overview the topics of Situational Awareness (SCADA, monitoring, alarms and State Estimation), Operational Reliability (formerly security assessment), Contingency Analysis, Load Frequency Control (LFC), Economic Dispatch, Automatic Generation Control (AGC), Unit Commitment, Interchange, Markets, Balancing Authorities, Reliability Coordinators, and Independent System Operators. Each of these topics could be the target of a malicious attack both from inside or outside the organization. Several known vulnerabilities will be discussed.
