Lightweight Cyber Security Resiliency Framework

Summary Statement

NOTE: this is no longer an active CREDC research activity.

Resiliency is an emergent property that occurs because of design and operational elements that facilitate functional resilience. “Resilient” is commonly used as an adjective descriptor for many items, and to denote a system outcome that better meets performance expectations with respect to system operation under conditions of uncertainty or in an environment other than that which is ideal or desired. In operational technology (OT) systems, the objective of cybersecurity efforts is the continued safe operation of the system within acceptable parameters. Resilience can play a key role in achieving this objective. To achieve resiliency, one needs the underlying system properties to be engaged, and this activity is examining resiliency from a scientific perspective to distill out the necessary elements that need to be included to facilitate this. Organizing these elements into a framework that can be used by system designers and builders can enhance system creation and lead to more resilient systems. The deliverable of this research activity will be a descriptive framework in the form of a white paper, detailing an example to facilitate adoption.
