Abstract

Conventional cybersecurity intrusion detection sys-tems monitor network traffic for malicious activity and indica-tions that an adversary has gained access to the system. The approach discussed here expands the idea of a traditional intru-sion detection system within electrical power systems, specifically power distribution networks, by monitoring both the network traffic and voltage/current behavior of the grid. This is achieved through the use of high-rate distribution PMUs, alongside SCADA, for the purpose of learning the normal behavior of both the power grid and communication networks. The resulting system alerts the operator when abnormal behavior is observed. A framework for learning this normal behavior is presented and validated on a data-set from a pilot deployment site.
